I have done these trail multiple times, and the pictures on this page are a few months ago, where a couple of us did both Scottish National Trails. Inspired by the person above in the photos, he suggested how cool it would be to do the Scottish Highlands in the winter. How pristine, quiet, people free, and surreal it would be. So here it is. We will do the Great Glen Way first to get our feet wet, literally, and then do the West Highland Way. At the end we will do a big rest day, and then a ascent/descent of Ben Nevis, the UK's largest mountain.
We will fly into (most likely London or Paris), then either an overnight in those cities for a short flight to Edinburgh the next day. From there we will take the train to Inverness, and begin the Great-Glen Way, right at the official start at the base of Inverness Castle. After we complete the Great Glen Way, we will take a day at the hiking town of Fort William, and its very cool, with a giant sprawling commercial downtown. Then from there, we take the train to Milngavie for a big resupply, and start on the official national hiking trail of the West Highland Way. We finish back in Fort Williams, after some very remote hikes, and some great loch beach stays at campsites along the way. Most places take contactless and cards, but having British pounds before you head out, cant hurt. Please note the following below
- It will be comfortably cold and minimally wet, as opposed to the summer where it rains every day...and most likely we will see snow. Can provide snow spikes if you need them which you can keep.
- Be prepared for rugged winter conditions. NO bitching or complaining, except from me :)
- It is February, so it is the driest month to hike in Scotland, but it will rain regardless and temps are a comfy 45F in day time, and into the very low 30's at night. PERFECT hiking and camping weather.
- It is your responsibility to have all the necessary items to travel: passport, and EITAS form, which you can do yourself HERE
- It will be your responsibility to get to NYC airports. Can scoop you from either Newark (preferred), JFK (preferred) or Laguardia. Will tell you exact day to fly down by October 1.
- We will all meet the day before departure to London in Manhattan as a group to discuss the winter trek and any other gear you might need you can get in NYC at REI or equivalent.
(All pictures here are our own that we or our participants have taken of our treks in the past are not stock photos *unless indicated as such)
